what does the Franchise tag actually do, I know it sort of forces a player to sign a deal but what are the specifics of it?
Answer: it doesnt force you to do anything. why dont you just look this up on wikipedia? anyways, there are 2 kinds. exclusive and nonexclusive. im not getting into the difference, but i'll give you the general idea. it is a 1 year deal in which the player is payed the average salaries of the top 5 players in the league at his position from the previous 5 years. either that, or he makes 120% of what that player made the previous year. to determine which one, the one that costs more is what that player is made and a team may only tag 1 player per year.

What does it mean when teams put the "FRANCHISE TAG" on a designated player?

Ive been watching sports for a long time and ive always heard this term come up in a lot of discussions. What does it mean when sports teams put the "Franchise tag" on a designated player? Does this only apply to players in the NFL or can any sport do it? What are the terms and conditions of it and is it a good or bad thing to do?
Answer: You hear about it most in the NFL but I think it can be done in other sports...the Franchise tag means that you will pay that player more than any other player, each year for the stint of his contract. (At least that's my understanding of the Franchise tag...I may be wrong.)

Answer: the Franchise tag just makes sure if the team cant sign the player and no other team can sign him. it basically guarantees the player will come back for at least one season and there will be more time to resign him. so if the colts didnt put the Franchise tag on dallas clark and they couldnt resign him, he could sign with any team in free agency.

What exactly is the purpose of the "FRANCHISE TAG"?

By the sound of it, I thought the Franchise tag was a good thing...but then you always hear about players complaing about organizations placing the tag on them, so can anybody explain to me what the tag does and means?
Answer: I put in two links that do a decent job of explaining franchise and transition tags. It gets even more convoluted with "exclusive" and "non-exclusive" franchise players. "By definition, the Franchise tag can be used by an NFL team to keep one of their pending free agents from signing with any other teams. The team must tender the player a one-year contract that is the minimum of the average of the five largest salaries as of [April 15]...." In short, what was intended to be a means to retain and in some respect reward a top player is being met with fury. Players want long-term security, and a 'tag' is placing them at injury risk with no up front bonus to offset that risk.

Why do players hate the FRANCHISE TAG option teams use?

First of all, i only know about this as it pertains to ht NFL, idk if any other league has this. But how i understand it, a team can use its Franchise tag on a player of their choosing once a year. In doing so, they take the top 5 salaries of the players of that position and average it to determine their players salary for one year. Outside of the fact that the player is only signed to a one year contract (which is kinda risky from a tenor standpoint), why do players not like the tag?
Answer: If the player were to get seriously hurt in a contract year its very likely that their next contract will be much smaller. It can also be bad if they were franchised after having a career year if they don't follow it up with another similar year its back to the smaller contract.

Answer: I don't like the Franchise tag either. Unfortunately, the Franchise tag rules will not change with the new CBA. I know the players were pushing to do away with the Franchise tags, or at least stop the practice of allowing owners to franchise the same player in consecutive years. But I guess they didn't push hard enough. I really don't want to fault the players for not pursuing the issue harder. We don't know what compromise they gained from the owners by pulling their opposition to the Franchise tag. Maybe we'll learn more as time goes by.

Answer: The Franchise tag is placed on one player at the end of each season who is set to become a free agent. Even though the player may not technically be under contract, it prevents them from signing with another team. It basically ensures that the player remains with the team the following year. Some teams end up signing contracts with their Franchise tag, others don't. If the Franchise tag is set on a player, it guarantees the player the average salary of the top five in their position for that season. Players usually don't like being the tagged player because the tag only lasts for one year, rather than a long-term contract. Also, if they are unhappy with their current team, it removes the option of signing with someone else possibly for a larger paycheck. Some players add a clause in their contracts that doesn't allow their team to place the tag on them (That's what Lance Briggs did last year with his new contract after being tagged by the Bears)

Why dont players like the FRANCHISE TAG?

I know that the Franchise tag usually keeps a player in a team when he is a free agent. But what I dont get is why does the player (like lance briggs, for example) complain about it? Yes, they can not test free agency because of the Franchise tag, but he is gonna get paid the top 5 salary of his position or 150% of his previous salary. He is making much more money than before, so why does he complain? Besides, isnt kind of an honor to know that your a very important part of your team, and your team will not let you go?
Answer: It's very simple, when a player gets to the point that they either want to negotiate a new deal with their current team or test the free agent market they are looking for long term deals of at least 3 years hopefully more. A Franchise tag means the team keeps you for one more year. Therefore no long term security, if the player gets hurt or their stats go down during that one year they stand to lose alot of money in the long haul. Even though these guys are making alot more money than us (remember $250,000 is the minimum wage) they want the same thing you want and thats job security, and also unlike us their careers last an average of 10 years or less so they are looking to make all they can before it's time to retire. One thing I want to say about this subject before I close, it makes me sick when you see people complain about "the player is greedy, all they want is more money" when everyone on Y!Answers know that if we were lucky enough to be in their positions we would do the same thing, Get all you can before you have to retire.

Answer: As you mentioned, the first step is to grant the injunction to the players. Now either way this goes, the other side will appeal and Judge Nelson knows this, that is why there is a strong sentiment that she will side with the players but grant a "stay" of the injunction which will cause the final decision to be made in the appeal. Aside from that, it is assumed that if she does lift the lockout, she will tell the league to operate under it's most recent rules, which includes the 6 year minimum for unrestricted free agency and use of Franchise tags. She could order different rules, but that would not make much sense for her because it has no impact on the case.

Answer: What it is: teams get 1 "tag" to dub a player who is a free agent as their franchise player. This player then (in essense) gets a 1 year contract for the average pay of the top 5 players at his position. There is no signing bonus because no real contract is signed. Players see this as a bad thing. Because you never know how long your NFL career will last and they want the big bonuses associated with long-term deals.

Answer: It means that LT needs to either redo his contract or they will attempt to trade him and if that fails he will be cut. They have already said that he cant stay at the cap number he will cost (8.9 million for next season) and if they cant restructure his deal the Bolts will look at available free agents and possibly spend an early pick on an RB in the upcoming draft. Such is life in the salary cap era when contracts are backloaded and not guaranteed (non guaranteed contracts are the standard in the NFL for cap reasons), it insures that veteran stars are more likely to finish their careers in a different uniform and that might be the case here.
