LOU GEHRIG?

does anyone know anything about Lou gehrig, the old baseball player for the yankees?
Answer: The first Iron Man of baseball - Lou held the record for the most consecutive games played prior to Ripken Jr. breaking it. He played 2130 consecutive games from 1925 to 139 (15 years). He was a left handed first baseman. He holds the record for the most career grand slam homeruns with 23. He won the American League MVP twice (1927 and 1936). He finished witha triple crown of hitting in 1934 (led the league in batting average, HR and RBI). He retired early from baseball after being diagnosed with amyotrohic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which is now referred to as Lou gehrig's Disease. You can also watch a film about the disease itself with Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter called The Theory of Flight. Gehrig is often regarded as the greatest first basemen ever to play Major League Baseball and holds the highest slugging percentage for a first basemen in a career. While playing for the Yankees, he was teamed up with Babe Ruth. Ruth hit third in the line up and Gerhig hit fourth. It's said that Babe Ruth - often considered the greatest player to play baseball - was never intentionally walked during the years that Gehrig was on the team - because that'd be putting a guy on for Gehrig to drive in, and they'd have rather taken their chances with Ruth. The movie Pride of the Yankees is based on Gehrig's life from college to his famous "luckiest man on earth" speech. Gary Cooper played the role of Gehrig - and Babe Ruth was still alive and played himself in the movie. If you'd like to know more about statistics of Gehrig, go to www.baseball-reference.com and search on Gehrig's name.

What kind of the cancer does LOU GEHRIG had?

Do you knows what happened to Lou gehrig? If you knows that, tell me more informations. Found the website that can relate to Lous cancer.
Answer: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, sometimes called Lou gehrig's Disease, Maladie de Charcot or motor neurone disease) is a progressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body as both the upper and lower motor neurons degenerate and die, ceasing to send messages to muscles. Unable to function, the muscles gradually weaken, atrophy, and develop fasciculations (twitches) because of denervation. Eventually, the brain completely loses its ability to initiate and control voluntary movement. The disease does not necessarily debilitate the patient's mental functioning in the same manner as Alzheimer's disease or other neurological conditions. Rather, those suffering advanced stages of the disease may retain the same memories, personality, and intelligence they had before its onset. Scientists have not found a definitive cause for ALS and the onset of the disease can be linked to a variety of risk factors. It is believed that one or more of the following factors are responsible for the majority of ALS cases. Researchers suspect a virus, exposure to neurotoxins or heavy metals, DNA defects (especially in familial ALS), immune system abnormalities, and enzyme abnormalities as the leading causes of the disease. There is a hereditary factor in familial ALS (FALS) however there is no known hereditary component in the 90-95% cases diagnosed as sporadic ALS. A few causative factors have been discovered. Prolonged exposure to a dietary neurotoxin is the suspected risk factor in Guamanian ALS. The neurotoxin is a compound (a sterol beta-D-glucoside[7]) found in the seed of the cycad Cycas circinalis, a tropical plant found in Guam, which was used in the human food supply during the 1950s and early 1960s. An inherited genetic defect linked to a defect on chromosome 21 is believed to cause approximately 40% of familial ALS cases. This mutation is believed to be autosomal dominant. The children of those diagnosed with familial ALS have a higher risk factor for developing the disease, however those who have close family members diagnosed with sporadic ALS have no greater a risk factor than the general population [2]. According to The ALS Association, military veterans are at an increased risk of contracting ALS. In its report ALS in the Military, the group pointed to an almost 60% greater chance of the disease in military veterans than the general population.

Is LOU GEHRIG regarded as the best first baseman in the history of baseball?

or was it Babe Ruth? Or was Lou gehrig exceptionally good at another position/job.
Answer: Although the Babe did play, other than pitching, several games at firsr base in1917 (13) and a few other times (19),in other seasons. He was soon switched to the outfield to take advantage of his superior running speed and his tremendous throwing ability. Gehrig was always a first baseman and is regarded as the greatest first baseman of all time. Gehrig was quite athletic and was a better than average fielder. This is just an aside: Foxx rates at number two. He played on some very high scoring Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Redsox teams, so somebody was getting on base ahead of Foxx. His RBI numbers are far from shoddy.

How much is a LOU GEHRIG letter worth?

In 1929 during the great depression my grandfather wrote a letter to his favorite baseball player, Lou gehrig. A few years later, he got a response from Lou, a long and personal letter with a photograph thanking my grandfather for his support and wishing him luck. The letter has been handed down through the family. Although not interested in selling it, I was curious about what monetary value it might have.
Answer: Well, a guy paid $40,000 for a bunch of letters from Gehrig to his doctor talking about his career-ending disease. However, you'll price will be different because 1. It's only one letter 2. It's not as major as what the letter was about 3. It is personalized It will probably end up being worth about $7,500-10,000. If it came with his signature, it's probably worth the upper end of $9,000. But I wouldn't sell it. It's got a lot of sentimental value with it being handed down by generation and all. That's a really amazing item you have, and you're really lucky to have it.

Think of it as Fantasy Free Agency. Albert Pujols took the money and ran, but what if free agency had existed for the most hallowed names in baseball? What if Babe Ruth or Joe DiMaggio or Ted Williams or Stan Musial or Sandy Koufax or Bob Feller had been able to test the market as Pujols did? Who would have leapt to another team? Who would have - Dave Anderson Sports of The Times considers the possibilities if some of baseballs greatest players had had the benefit of free agency over the years. Photo (M) - By DAVE ANDERSON

Did Albert Pujols already surpass LOU GEHRIG as the greatest 1st baseman of all time?

A lot of people say Gehrig is the best 1st baseman of all time. But Pujols is putting up monster numbers and could do everything! How much better of a 1st baseman is Pujols compared to Lou gehrig and why? Do you think that when Pujols retires he will be considered the best 1st baseman of all time?
Answer: Gehrig is still the better first baseman. Gehrig still surpasses Pujols in all offensive categories. But give Pujols a few more years and he could surpass him. I mean Gehrig played for 16 seasons, while Pujols has only played 9, so it's really not fair to compare them at this point. I still think Pujols is a beast player though.
