George washington – first American president, commander of the Continental Army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and gentleman planter.

In what ways did GEORGE WASHINGTON contribute to the development of the United States?

Hi. I have to answer the question "In what ways did George washington contribute to the development of the United States during the time period 1763-1796?" All answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Answer: As general of the Continental army, he led the fight that achieved the country's independence. As chair of the Constitutional Convention, he helped give that country its government. And as that government's first president, he not only guided the nation safely through its most vulnerable years, but established the precedents that still shape the presidency today. He was an international celebrity and a national hero, even in his own day. From Shmoop

How did GEORGE WASHINGTON immunize his troops in Yorktown and why?

In Yorktown, George washington immunized his troops intentionally so they could not become sick while the British troops could. What did he immunize them from, how, and exactly why?
Answer: ~From where did you get that information. The word vaccine wasn't coined until 13 years after Cornwallis surrendered. Although 2 or 3 people were playing with the idea of using deliberately infecting themselves with cowpox or mild cases of smallpox to protect against catching full blown smallpox in the early 1770s, their 'experiments' were largely unreported and was taking place in England and Germany, not in the colonies. Jenner went public in 1796. Vaccination started - slowly and with much reservation and trepidation - after that and after Louis Pasteur published his work. Sure, the Chinese were using a primitive vaccine in 200 BCE, the Indians (Asian) around 1000) and the Ottomans at least a century before Jenner, but who knew? I guess word of Emmanual Timoni's work in the 1720s could have reached the colonies, but if it did, I am unaware of it. If it is true that vaccination was an accepted practice and that sufficient cultures could have been created in 1781, the disease in question would have been smallpox as a matter of common sense and logical deduction (since all experimentation in the field was aimed at smallpox from the Chinese forward). Now then, a question to you. After de Grasse defeated Graves in the Battle of the Chesapeake and insured the French victory at Yorktown, and de Grasse delivered Marquis de Saint-Simon and his regiments to join those already present under Rochambeau, and de Barras arrived with his men and artillery, were the French inoculated too? After all, they outnumbered both the colonials and the British and the French were the largest, most efficient and best equipped contingent to take part in the siege. If one is going to use a rare resource to protect an army, wouldn't one want to protect the best and most elite troops? Edit: Thank you staisil. You were posting while I was typing and I saw yours too late. I checked and discovered that Cotton Mather learned the technique in 1721 from one of his slaves. Seems the Africans had picked up the process from China by way of India and the Turks. I guess one can learn something on this site. I appreciate it. 1777, huh? I guess it had nothing whatsoever to do with Yorktown. Given the losses he had already suffered to the epidemic in contrast to the resistance against the disease of the variolated British troops, Washington's orders for mandatory variolation of all his men and all new recruits made eminently good sense, especially with the privations and disease at Valley Forge looming. Live and learn. To Greg: The why is obvious. The Continental Army troop strength had been reduced by half by a smallpox epidemic and Washington called the disease his "most dangerous foe". The British troops had already recovered or had variolated themselves and were thus immune to the spreading epidemic. Washington issued his orders out of self-preservation and as a risky, last gasp effort to save his army and to have a force available with which to take on a healthy adversarial force. He was highly criticized for doing it, but it worked. [use staisil's tag. I found the same site by conventional searching in about 90 seconds, but it is easier to just click. Another lesson learned, perhaps.]

Why do Republicans keep saying GEORGE WASHINGTON is their favourite president?

George washington favoured strong government and frequently sided with Federalists. Besides that, he lived hundreds of years ago and has very little to do with todays politics. Shouldnt Republicans say that Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush are their favourites instead? Isnt saying Washington is your favourite president a bit like saying Rome or Athens is your favourite country?
Answer: I think Republicans generally say that Reagan is their favorite. Republicans believe he is part of the Holy Quadity.

Why was GEORGE WASHINGTON crucial to the colonies success in the War for Independence?

Im curious why George washington was crucial too the colonies success in the War for Independence. Describe two moves that he made during the war that exemplify why he was so valuable as a leader. Contrast him with one British leader.
Answer: He truly believed he had the right to be free (I'm sure his slaves wish he had thought they had that same right) and not live under English rule and be an inferior subject. He was also a very powerful and rich man (thanks Martha) so people listened to him and he was a natural for the leadership role in the Army. It didn't hurt that he came to all the meetings in his old English uniform. He was also the Hero of Monongahela.

Did GEORGE WASHINGTON spread a rumor about gunpowder during the Siege of Boston?

I remember during class my teacher mentioned that George washington spread a rumor that he had 1800 barrels of gunpowder when he really had 36 barrels but what I want to know is if he spread this rumor during the Siege of Boston. That the only thing I can t remember about the lesson but ironiclly its the very fact I need to finish my homework. Thank you to anyone who answers, I really appreiciate it.
Answer: Washington assumed command of the Continental Army in the field at Cambridge, Massachusetts in July 1775, during the ongoing siege of Boston. Realizing his army’s desperate shortage of gunpowder, Washington asked for new sources. American troops raided British arsenals, including some in the Caribbean, and some manufacturing was attempted. They obtained a barely adequate supply (about 2.5 million pounds) by the end of 1776, mostly from France. Washington reorganized the army during the long standoff, and forced the British to withdraw by putting artillery on Dorchester Heights overlooking the city. The British evacuated Boston and Washington moved his army to New York City. Washington did have a covert intelligence system set up. Perhaps through that system a rumor was sent.

Answer: He chose NOT to be king ( a post he was offered ). He warned of foreign entanglements. Any important things GEORGE WASHINGTON did before and during the Revolutionary War?

And any adventures and experiences George washington went on or experienced before and during the war too ? Who were his friends and companions? LIFESTYLE AND PERSONAL HABITS- Values he or she believed in? How was he a risk taker? George washingtons leadership experiences
Answer: Adventures: --"In 1751, George and his half-brother travelled to Barbados, staying at Bush Hill House, hoping for an improvement in Lawrence's tuberculosis. This was the only time George washington travelled outside what is now the United States." --"Washington embarked upon a career as a planter and in 1748 was invited to help survey Baron Fairfax's lands west of the Blue Ridge. In 1749, he was appointed to his first public office, surveyor of newly created Culpeper County" --"In December 1753, Washington was detailed by Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia to carry a British ultimatum to the French on the Ohio frontier. Washington assessed French military strength and intentions, and to delivered the message to the French at Fort Le Boeuf in present day Waterford, Pennsylvania. The message, which went unheeded, called for the French to abandon their development of the Ohio country, setting in motion two colonial powers toward worldwide conflict. Washington's report on the affair was widely read on both sides of the Atlantic." --Active in the Seven Years War (google it) --Friends: John Adams; one of his closest friends was Tobias Lear V, who was Washington's personal secretary [he was with Washington at his deathbed]; George Mason; Lt. Charles Smith; Thomas Jefferson; John Marshall [who 'idolized' Washington] --Values: He was pretty religious. He served on the vestry of his local church in 1765, and "throughout his life, he spoke of the value of righteousness, and of seeking and offering thanks for the "blessings of Heaven."" He strongly believed in freedom of religion and religious toleration. He was very open-minded regarding other peoples beliefs/ethnicities: "When hiring workmen for Mount Vernon, he wrote to his agent, "If they be good workmen, they may be from Asia, Africa, or Europe; they may be Mohammedans, Jews, or Christians of any sect, or they may be Atheists.""

How much are one cent GEORGE WASHINGTON post stamps worth?

I have some old George washington post stamps, I dont know what year they are but they are both one cent stamps, green, one looks like the George washington from the dollar bill (except he is looking right instead of left) and the other is the same picture as on quarters. They are both post stamped. Are they worth any money?
Answer: The first one might be like this http://stampstore.org/sto_DisplayImage.asp?Image=0810/208101030H.jpg except he's facing the same way on the dollar bill. If this is the one, it's from about 1954 and American collectors would call it United States Scott number 1031 or 1031b. Both are very common and are of minimal value. Your second one is more difficult because there are about 29 different American stamps that look like that but which vary by watermark and perforation and details of printing. They were first issued between 1912 and 1921. They range from common to rare and are priced accordingly. (But unless you are a collector, why would a rare one come into your possession?) Here's an example of one of them for comparison: http://stampstore.org/sto_DisplayImage.asp?Image=0810/208101030H.jpg

How to prepare a roasted onion the way GEORGE WASHINGTON did?

I read that when George washington had a cold he would eat a roasted onion before bed. This was in late 1700s so how would a roasted onion been prepared back then and how could I duplicate that today?
Answer: A wealthier man like Mr. Washington would have had a kitchen equipped with a brick oven as well as a cast iron stove. Either way, it would be more likely that the onion was washed, peeled and then either sliced in half or left whole, placed in a cast iron pan, drizzled with melted fat (bacon) and then roasted in the oven until golden brown. Or, the iron pot could have been covered and hung over an open fire in the kitchen hearth. It doesn't matter how you roast the onion. Just roast it and eat it. To roast an onion today, wash and peel it; Slice it in half. Drizzle with olive oil. Wrap it in foil (or put in a pan and cover with foil) and bake it at 350 degrees until golden brown. But doctors today will doubt its efficacy in healing a cold. Onions are good for you, but there are other cold remedies that would work better and faster.

what did GEORGE WASHINGTON think about alliances with other countries?

Im doing a history debate and its about whether the us should make alliances with other countries and we have to do it through the opinions of George washington and Woodrow Wilson. Im George washington and all i know is that hes against alliances, but i dont know any details.
Answer: Washington's foreign policy positions were very much defined by the situation of the time. The US was very small and weak compared to the major powers of Europe. It had virtually no army or navy beyond the civilian militias that had fought the Revolution. The great benefit of the US was that it was relatively isolated. Major European powers of Britain, France, and Spain were regularly at war with one another. The US was an ocean away and could remain away from the fighting. Still, European powers were regularly trying to draw the US into disputes on their side to fight the other powers. Americans themselves were divided on which countries with which to ally themselves. Washington implemented a policy of neutrality. The US would not form military alliances with any other countries. It sought only to be left alone and to engage in free private trade. From:

How was GEORGE WASHINGTONs advice taken in all of the different areas?

In George washingtons farewell Address, George washington warned the new nation against political parties, sectionalism, and involvement in European rivalries. What Im trying to figure out is how well his advice was taken in each area.
Answer: WOW!! I'm just read an exert from it and i had to answer some questions about it. Washington definitely warned us about the 'spirit of parties' but I don't think it was actually listened to. Americans listened more closely to his advice on foreign policy when he said to remain neutral. Alexander Hamilton wanted to stay out of Europe's affairs, but Thomas Jefferson thought America should help with the French Revolution (Here we see that the parties split. Federalists vs. Democratic Republicans.)

What was GEORGE WASHINGTONs personal interest in quelling the Whiskey Rebellion?

There is a common assertion that this country is in moral decline. And I wonder if thats really the case. There are taxes on privilege and taxes on production (Freedom). One is moral and the other not. So to determine the decline we must look back to when liberty itself was cheapened. The articles of confederation did not allow production taxes. And then that was lost in the constitution. What were the issues of the rebelion in that context, with an extra focus on what were Georges motivations. Did the moral decline actually start with George washington?
Answer: The tax affected smaller producers more than larger ones. George washington was one such large producer of whiskey. And it was Alexander Hamilton who suggested the whiskey and carriage tax. But the result of the rebellion was that smaller producers in Tennessee and Kentucky benefited while Pennsylvania not so much. That's why we have better Whiskey and Bourbon now. LOL But it's moot since that tax was repealed.
