Answer: Here's some info - hope it helps.. Scattered through the old-growth forest are many smaller trees that grow well in the cool dense shade. Pacific silver fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock create a cool multi-layered forest where the temperature remains moderate, even during the hottest days of summer. The forests of Mount Rainier provide homes for many animals and plants, including the northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus), the hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), and the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis). Black-Tailed Deer follow the melting snows up toward Paradise in early summer as the shrubs develop buds and leaves, and huckleberries begin to ripen. In June and July new fawns appear. Their tan and white spotted fur helps them blend into their surroundings. Coyotes are about the size and shape of a German shepherd dog, and have silvery tan fur with a black tip on the tail. They normally eat small rodents, berries, fruits and carrion. You may see them anywhere in the park. Red Foxes are often seen at picnic areas around Longmire and Paradise. They may look gray or even black in color. If you see a fox, do not feed it! It needs to hunt for its natural food to stay healthy! Douglas’ Squirrels, also known as Chickarees, are quite common in the park. Their fur is dark reddish black on the back with orange-brown patches on their sides. They feed on tree cones and are found throughout the forested sections of the park. Elk resemble deer, but are much larger (800-1000 lbs.) Their bodies are a rich brown color, their heads and necks are darker brown, and they have a light tan or white patch around the rump. Male elk shed their antlers each winter and grow a new set the following summer. Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels are slightly larger than chipmunks and have stripes down their backs, but not on their faces (you can tell them apart this way). Although chipmunks and ground squirrels eat many of the same foods, they coexist because chipmunks climb into the lower branches of trees and shrubs to forage, while ground squirrels remain on the ground.

Answer: I drove up Mount Rainier last year. I live in Seattle. It was named by British explorer Captain George Vancouver who named the mountain for his friend Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. I did not realize it was a volcano until I saw the Volcano Evacuation routes and Leharre exits. I got scarred to death. If you drive up there at 3:00 AM on a full moon, the top of the mountain glows. It is a winding drive up the old mountain. Your ears will start popping at 5,500 feet/ The mountain is full of people walking around. When you walk into the falls, you will find people standing there. It is funny. There are 2,000,000 per year that visit Mount Rainier, some of them hitch hike others drive and it is nice and quiet and very clean. I felt a sense of peace up there. The first recorded summating of the mountain took place on August 17th, 1870 by Philemon Beecher Van Trump and Hazard Stevens. The two men were kept from freezing to death by staying near a natural steam vent. It is 14,411 feet tall and has 26 major glaciers and the glaciers cover 35 miles of space. It has not erupted in 2,500 years, but there are a lot of earthquakes albeit small. The rock is 500,000 years old. It is located in Pierce County Washington

Answer: Olympia!! Not even close. Olympia national park is one of the coolest parks that I have been to in the US. Yes, you will have to take a ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island but it's not that much. It is like $12 for you and your car each way. You should go south, however, after leaving Olympia and go to Lake Quinault and stay at the Forest Service Lodge. Get reservations ahead of time - it is very, very cool. How cold is MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK during May till June? Do I have to bring thick winter wear?

Answer: You won't need "thick winter wear" but definitely plan on rain. They key is to have layers. I would bring long pants (maybe ONE pair of shorts, but I'll bet you won't need them), long-sleeve t-shirts, fleece, thermals (for night), and rain gear. Bring more socks than you think you'll need, and bring some wool ones for evening. A fleece hat is your best friend at night, and you will want gloves too. Waterproof boots or rugged shoes are a must.
