"CORIOLANUS" at the Stratford Festival--Has anybody seen it?

Shakespeares tragedy "Coriolanus" at the Stratford Festival in Ontario-- If you saw it, had you already read the play? Did you like the production? Or if you have read the play-- What do you think of this play?
Answer: "Coriolanus" is a great and, in my opinion, unjustly neglected play. It's tempting to compare it to "Julius Caesar" because of the Roman settings, but they're really quite different. Whereas "Caesar" is much more overtly political (asking the common Shakespearean question: what are the people justified in doing when they are confronted with a corrupt ruler?), "Coriolanus" is much more of a character study. Caius Marcius Coriolanus has been raised by a domineering mother to believe -- to KNOW -- that he is better than the common people. He becomes a great war hero, but -- and here's the irony -- in order to make the transition from military to political life, he needs the support of the very citizens he has constantly disparaged. His arrogance gets him banished from Rome, at which point he joins forces with his mortal enemy, Tullus Aufidius, and together, they lead the Volscian army back towards Rome. Only the intervention of Coriolanus' mother at the last minute prevents Rome from being sacked...although it does seal Caius Marcius' tragic fate. I find the play very exciting, and very timely. Certainly, in our lifetimes, we've seen numerous examples of military men attempting to parlay their combat success into political capital. I haven't seen the production at Stratford, but I saw one many years ago in Ashland, OR (featuring two brilliant performances, Dennis Arndt as Coriolanus and Stuart Duckworth as Aufidius) that I remember as being one of the best shows I ever saw. Recently, I saw the production at A Noise Within (Los Angeles' finest classical theatre company), and was equally impressed.

Meaning behind Volumnias monologue in CORIOLANUS?

Hi. I have an audition for Troilus and Cressida, and Im using the following monologue from Coriolanus. Id like to know exactly what it means before I audition with it. Does anyone know? ~~~~~~ O, no more, no more! You have said you will not grant us anything; For we have nothing else to ask but that Which you deny already; yet we will ask, That, if you fail in our request, the blame May hang upon your hardness. Think with thyself How more unfortunate than all living women Are we come hither; since that thy sight, which should Make our eyes flow with joy, hearts dance with comforts, Constrains them weep and shake with fear and sorrow, Making the mother, wife, and child to see The son, the husband, and the father tearing His countrys bowels out. And to poor we Thine enmitys most capital. Thou barrst us Our prayers to the gods, which is a comfort That all but we enjoy. For how can we, Alas, how can we for our country pray, Whereto we are bound, together with thy victory, Whereto we are bound? Alack, or we must lose The country, our dear nurse, or else thy person, Our comfort in the country. We must find An evident calamity, though we had Our wish which side should win. For either thou Must as a foreign recreant be led With manacles through our streets, or else Triumphantly tread on thy countrys ruin, And bear the palm for having bravely shed Thy wife and childrens blood. For myself, son, I purpose not to wait on fortune till These wars determine. If I cannot persuade thee Rather to show a noble grace to both parts Than seek the end of one, thou shalt no sooner March to assault thy country than to tread-- Trust to t, thou shalt not -- on thy mothers womb That brought thee to this world.

in the play , the plebeians were talking very nasty and bad of Coriolanus , and how they should get rid of him so that they could have whatever they want. my question here is why the plebeians dont like Coriolanus in the first place ?
Answer: "The play opens in Rome shortly after the expulsion of the Tarquin kings. There are riots in progress, after stores of grain were withheld from ordinary citizens. The rioters are particularly angry at Caius Martius, a brilliant Roman general whom they blame for the grain's being taken away." Are you an expert in "Pride and Prejudice" and/or "CORIOLANUS"?

Hello I am French and I have to study these two famous books for an exam. I need to know experts who could give me tips about them that would be different from the traditional and sometimes inaccurate lectures of my professors.
Answer: Pride and Prejudice Plot Overview: The news that a wealthy young gentleman named Charles Bingley has rented the manor of Netherfield Park causes a great stir in the nearby village of Longbourn, especially in the Bennet household. The Bennets have five unmarried daughters—from oldest to youngest, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia—and Mrs. Bennet is desperate to see them all married. After Mr. Bennet pays a social visit to Mr. Bingley, the Bennets attend a ball at which Mr. Bingley is present. He is taken with Jane and spends much of the evening dancing with her. His close friend, Mr. Darcy, is less pleased with the evening and haughtily refuses to dance with Elizabeth, which makes everyone view him as arrogant and obnoxious. At social functions over subsequent weeks, however, Mr. Darcy finds himself increasingly attracted to Elizabeth’s charm and intelligence. Jane’s friendship with Mr. Bingley also continues to burgeon, and Jane pays a visit to the Bingley mansion. On her journey to the house she is caught in a downpour and catches ill, forcing her to stay at Netherfield for several days. In order to tend to Jane, Elizabeth hikes through muddy fields and arrives with a spattered dress, much to the disdain of the snobbish Miss Bingley, Charles Bingley’s sister. Miss Bingley’s spite only increases when she notices that Darcy, whom she is pursuing, pays quite a bit of attention to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth and Jane return home, they find Mr. Collins visiting their household. Mr. Collins is a young clergyman who stands to inherit Mr. Bennet’s property, which has been “entailed,” meaning that it can only be passed down to male heirs. Mr. Collins is a pompous fool, though he is quite enthralled by the Bennet girls. Shortly after his arrival, he makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth. She turns him down, wounding his pride. Meanwhile, the Bennet girls have become friendly with militia officers stationed in a nearby town. Among them is Wickham, a handsome young soldier who is friendly toward Elizabeth and tells her how Darcy cruelly cheated him out of an inheritance. At the beginning of winter, the Bingleys and Darcy leave Netherfield and return to London, much to Jane’s dismay. A further shock arrives with the news that Mr. Collins has become engaged to Charlotte Lucas, Elizabeth’s best friend and the poor daughter of a local knight. Charlotte explains to Elizabeth that she is getting older and needs the match for financial reasons. Charlotte and Mr. Collins get married and Elizabeth promises to visit them at their new home. As winter progresses, Jane visits the city to see friends (hoping also that she might see Mr. Bingley). However, Miss Bingley visits her and behaves rudely, while Mr. Bingley fails to visit her at all. The marriage prospects for the Bennet girls appear bleak. That spring, Elizabeth visits Charlotte, who now lives near the home of Mr. Collins’s patron, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who is also Darcy’s aunt. Darcy calls on Lady Catherine and encounters Elizabeth, whose presence leads him to make a number of visits to the Collins’s home, where she is staying. One day, he makes a shocking proposal of marriage, which Elizabeth quickly refuses. She tells Darcy that she considers him arrogant and unpleasant, then scolds him for steering Bingley away from Jane and disinheriting Wickham. Darcy leaves her but shortly thereafter delivers a letter to her. In this letter, he admits that he urged Bingley to distance himself from Jane, but claims he did so only because he thought their romance was not serious. As for Wickham, he informs Elizabeth that the young officer is a liar and that the real cause of their disagreement was Wickham’s attempt to elope with his young sister, Georgiana Darcy. This letter causes Elizabeth to reevaluate her feelings about Darcy. She returns home and acts coldly toward Wickham. The militia is leaving town, which makes the younger, rather man-crazy Bennet girls distraught. Lydia manages to obtain permission from her father to spend the summer with an old colonel in Brighton, where Wickham’s regiment will be stationed. With the arrival of June, Elizabeth goes on another journey, this time with the Gardiners, who are relatives of the Bennets. The trip takes her to the North and eventually to the neighborhood of Pemberley, Darcy’s estate. She visits Pemberley, after making sure that Darcy is away, and delights in the building and grounds, while hearing from Darcy’s servants that he is a wonderful, generous master. Suddenly, Darcy arrives and behaves cordially toward her. Making no mention of his proposal, he entertains the Gardiners and invites Elizabeth to meet his sister. Shortly thereafter, however, a letter arrives from home, telling Elizabeth that Lydia has eloped with Wickham and that the couple is nowhere to be found, which suggests that they may be living together out of wedlock. Fearful of the disgrace such a situation would bring on her entire family, Elizabeth hastens home. Mr. Gardiner and Mr. Bennet go off to search for Lydia, but Mr. Bennet eventually returns home empty-handed. Just when all hope seems lost, a letter comes from Mr. Gardiner saying that the couple has been found and that Wickham has agreed to marry Lydia in exchange for an annual income. The Bennets are convinced that Mr. Gardiner has paid off Wickham, but Elizabeth learns that the source of the money, and of her family’s salvation, was none other than Darcy. Now married, Wickham and Lydia return to Longbourn briefly, where Mr. Bennet treats them coldly. They then depart for Wickham’s new assignment in the North of England. Shortly thereafter, Bingley returns to Netherfield and resumes his courtship of Jane. Darcy goes to stay with him and pays visits to the Bennets but makes no mention of his desire to marry Elizabeth. Bingley, on the other hand, presses his suit and proposes to Jane, to the delight of everyone but Bingley’s haughty sister. While the family celebrates, Lady Catherine de Bourgh pays a visit to Longbourn. She corners Elizabeth and says that she has heard that Darcy, her nephew, is planning to marry her. Since she considers a Bennet an unsuitable match for a Darcy, Lady Catherine demands that Elizabeth promise to refuse him. Elizabeth spiritedly refuses, saying she is not engaged to Darcy, but she will not promise anything against her own happiness. A little later, Elizabeth and Darcy go out walking together and he tells her that his feelings have not altered since the spring. She tenderly accepts his proposal, and both Jane and Elizabeth are married. * Coriolanus Plot overview: In ancient Rome, in the aftermath of a famine, the common people, or plebeians, demand the right to set their own price for the city's grain supply. In response to their protests, the ruling aristocracy, or patricians, grant the plebeians five representatives, or tribunes--a decision that provokes the ire of the proud patrician soldier Caius Martius, who has nothing but contempt for the lower classes. At this time, war breaks out with a neighboring Italian tribe, the Volscians, who are led by Martius' great rival, Tullus Aufidius. In the campaign that follows, the Volscians are defeated, and the Rome takes the Italian city of Corioles, thanks to the heroism of Martius. In recognition of his great deeds, he is granted the name Coriolanus. Upon his return to Rome, Coriolanus is given a hero's welcome, and the Senate offers to make him consul. In order to gain this office, however, he must go out and plead for the votes of the plebeians, a task that he undertakes reluctantly. At first, the common people agree to give him their votes, but they later reverse their decision at the prodding of two clever tribunes, Brutus and Sicinius, who consider Coriolanus an enemy of the people. This drives the proud Coriolanus into a fury, and he speaks out intemperately against the very idea of popular rule; Brutus and Sicinius, seizing on his words, declare him a traitor to the Roman state and drive him into exile. Desiring revenge against Rome, Coriolanus goes to his Volscian enemy, Aufidius, in the city of Antium, and makes peace with him. Aufidius is planning a new campaign against the Romans, and he welcomes Coriolanus's assistance, although he soon feels himself to be falling into his new ally's shadow. Their army proceeds to march on Rome, throwing the city into a panic--Rome's armies are helpless to stop the advance, and soon Aufidius and Coriolanus are encamped outside the city walls. Two of his oldest friends come pleading for mercy, but Coriolanus refuses to hear him. However, when his mother, Volumnia, to whom he is devoted, begs him to make peace, he relents, and the Romans hail Volumnia the savior of the city. Meanwhile, Coriolanus and the Volscians return to Antium, where the residents hail Coriolanus as a hero. Aufidius, feeling slighted, declares that Coriolanus's failure to take Rome amounts to treachery; in the ensuing argument, some of Aufidius' men assassinate Coriolanus. *

Why is CORIOLANUS not very well known in the literary world?

I am only 17. I am not a scholar; I am not a critic of literature; I simply love literature and enjoy pondering the depths of the human soul through literature. These last couple of months I have been reading through many of Shakespeares best known plays. I read Macbeth and I thought the meditation of mans folly and tragic usurp of triumph was unforgettable. I read the comedy Measure for Measure and thought it was a hilarious yet brilliant study of morality and redemption. I read Hamlet and fell in love with Shakespeares understanding of the human psyche. I then read Julius Caesar and was enamored with the Bards infatuation with political issues. Feeling that I have read most of the great plays and ready to move onto King Lear, I thought that I would give a lesser-known play a try; I chose Coriolanus. When I got through the first two acts I was not too impressed; I didnt see anything too spectacular. Then as I read through act three, I began to see Shakespeares ultimate talent of creating the tragic portrait of the most noble man. I saw Coriolanus as a more opaque character not wonted to unrealistic soliloquizing and gratuitous revelations as to his motives. I saw him as a real, prideful man whose subtle flaws led to his inevitable downfall. In the final act where his mother Volumnia and sister Virgilia come to persuade Marcius to not destroy Rome with the Volsces, I honestly cried being that in all of the reading I have done be it 19th century Russian literature to 21th century American literature, I had never seen such emotion and familial contact placed into a scene. I feel as if Coriolanus cathartic acquiescence as a response to this persuasion may be one of the top ten scenes in all of Literatures history. Sorry about that rant; I feel that I might as well be a little personal with my question. Why is Coriolanus not well known? And not even a very well known product of Shakespeare? My mother who has a PhD in literature has never heard of it and my English teacher hasnt either. I was just hoping that someone out there could explain this to me. Or, if you would like, tell me your opinion of the play... I would be more than delighted to hear it. If you would like to talk literature with me, feel free to email me at alext6678@yahoo.com Thank you!
Answer: After reading your description of Coriolanus, I'll have to re-read it - I missed all that the first time. I've read Shakespeare's complete works, but with little understanding except for Hamlet, which I've read many many times. For most people (myself included), one reading or one viewing of a Shakespeare play is not enough to bring much understanding. Therefore, we're dependent on the opinions of others to determine which plays are worth further study. The mainstream critics have been generally unkind to Coriolanus - they too missed what you have seen in this play. Although you already appreciate Hamlet, I think your appreciation might be even further enhanced if you browse my website about Hamlet: http://www.thyorisons.com/ (Be All My Sins Remembered) Domain name and web-page title derived from: The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons Be all my sins remember'd. I would also be interested in reading anything else you've written about Coriolanus before I begin re-reading it.
