What will the discovery of the HIGGS BOSON mean for everyone else?

So the Higgs boson may well be discovered. However, its difficult to imagine that the money spent on the project is in the interest of science alone. What could such a possible discovery mean at an entrepreneurial level? Could this affect technology over time for instance, and if so, how? Basically, how would lay peoples lives and perhaps means unwittingly change in a world after discovering the Higgs boson?
Answer: "entrepreneurial level"? Oh lord, help us all! Business people know absolutely nothing about the value of science and what actually motivates scientists and researchers. Like religion, business just get in the way of true human progress, in my opinion. Business should stick to what they're supposed to be doing, serving the needs of the people. Business should leave the value of scientific discovery to the scientists. The Higg's boson (or something like it) is an absolutely essential piece of knowledge necessary to complete the Standard Model Of Particle Physics and make complete sense of nature. A completed SMOPP could lead to a TOE or theory of everything (a unification of the four known forces of nature). With a TOE in hand, new insight might be had into the manipulation of matter and energy in ways yet undreamed of; thus, opening up new technologies and equally new pathways to the future. The money spent on the search for the Higg's, unlike the unnecessary wars we find ourselves bogged down in, will actually benefit humanity. All areas of scientific research has intrinsic value, unlike most business adventures. Closing in on the Higgs particle http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/blog/2009/mar/13/particlephysics-cern

HIGGS BOSON?

can someone explain to me what the Higgs boson is? i read something about it being the reason particles have mass, would that be true?
Answer: Keeping in mind that this is a simplification of a summary of a simplification (and you might want to check the Wikipedia entry for Higgs boson for a mere summary of a simplification): The idea is that everything comes from interactions of some sort. There's no such thing as "just is", things only exist if they can be measured, and measurement requires interaction. Charge, for example, comes from interaction of photons. But what does mass come from? The best candidate for the interaction particle that results in mass is the Higgs boson. Higgs after the guy who proposed it, Boson because it's a kind of particle that Bose described (everything can be split into Bosons and Fermions, based on spin). Unfortunately, while we've got plenty of evidence of photons, we don't have any experimental proof that Higgs bosons exist.

What is your understanding of the HIGGS BOSON?

The Higgs field is thought to be mediated by the theoretical Higgs boson (a subatomic particle), which is believed to imbue mass (i.e. resistance to acceleration) to certain subatomic particles. Could anyone share their understanding of how the Higgs boson, and/or the Higgs field actually work?
Answer: The Higgs boson is a hypothetical massive scalar elementary particle predicted to exist by the Standard Model of particle physics. It is the only Standard Model particle not yet observed, but plays a key role in explaining the origins of the mass of other elementary particles, in particular the difference between the massless photon and the very heavy W and Z bosons. Elementary particle masses, and the differences between electromagnetism (caused by the photon) and the weak force (caused by the W and Z bosons), are critical to many aspects of the structure of microscopic (and hence macroscopic) matter; thus if it exists, the Higgs boson has an enormous effect on the world around us. As of 2006, no experiment has directly detected the existence of the Higgs boson, but there is some indirect evidence for it. The Higgs boson was first predicted in 1963 by the British physicist Peter Higgs, working from the ideas of Philip Anderson, and independently by others. The particle called Higgs boson is in fact the quantum of one of the components of a Higgs field. In empty space, the Higgs field acquires a non-zero value, which permeates every place in the universe at all times. This vacuum expectation value (vev) of the Higgs field is constant and equal to 246 GeV. The existence of this non-zero vev plays a fundamental role: it gives mass to every elementary particle, including to the Higgs boson itself. In particular, the acquisition of a non-zero vev spontaneously breaks the electroweak gauge symmetry, a phenomenon known as the Higgs mechanism. This is the only known mechanism capable of giving mass to the gauge bosons that is also compatible with gauge theories. In the Standard Model, the Higgs field consists of two neutral and two charged component fields. One of the neutral and the charged component fields are Goldstone bosons, which are massless and unphysical. They become the longitudinal third-polarization components of the massive W and Z bosons. The quantum of the remaining neutral component corresponds to the massive Higgs boson. Since the Higgs field is a scalar field, the Higgs boson has spin zero. This means that this particle has no intrinsic angular momentum and that a collection of Higgs bosons satisfies the Bose-Einstein statistics. The Standard Model does not predict the value of the Higgs boson mass. It has been argued that if the mass of the Higgs boson lies between about 130 and 190 GeV, then the Standard Model can be valid at energy scales all the way up to the Planck scale (1016 TeV). However, most theorists expect new physics beyond the Standard Model to emerge at the TeV-scale, based on some unsatisfactory properties of the Standard Model. The highest possible mass scale allowed for the Higgs boson (or some other electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism) is around one TeV; beyond this point, the Standard Model becomes inconsistent without such a mechanism because unitarity is violated in certain scattering processes. Many models of Supersymmetry predict that the lightest Higgs boson (of several) will have a mass only slightly above the current experimental limits, at around 120 GeV or less.

HIGGS BOSON?

so the theory is the Higgs boson particle gives all fundemental particles their mass..so what was the particle before the Higgs boson gave it its mass?
Answer: The Higgs Field, a very speculative phenomenon, comprises the boson. But more than that, the HF exists in higher dimensions (higher than our standard four). These bosons exist not only in our space-time, but also in the other dimensions. In those other dimensions, the bosons have direction (like any force field, but this one's in another universe in part). Thus, the speculation goes, if a fundamental particle is aligned with the direction of the HF (aligned with those bosons) in one or more of those higher dimensions, it will have no mass characteristics (like a photon). If a particle is counter aligned with the HF, it will possess inertial characteristics like mass has in our universe. All fundamental particles are manifestations of strings. The graviton, another speculation, is a string vibrating at a specific frequency, which is what gives it its characteristics in our universe. And, as gravity is a force and has no inertial characteristics, that string is clearly aligned with the HF and the included Higgs bosons. [See source.] So, to answer your question, each particle is just a vibrating infinitely thin string of Plank length (~10^-33 cm). And whether it has mass-like characteristics depends on how it is oriented with the higher-dimensional Higgs Field. But, and this is a BIG BUT, all this is pure speculation (aka, WAG) based on incomplete mathematics (so-called perturbation math).

What is the difference, if any, between a HIGGS BOSON and a graviton? Are they not the same thing?

I have many sources on mass-inducing fields and their associated elementary particles, but they all mention either Higgs bosons OR gravitons, but never both. Both of these particles supposedly induce mass on other particles and both of them have yet to be detected in particle colliders. My gut feeling says they are different (why else would they have different names). Does anyone know?
Answer: You know, this is so easy to answer with a simple web search that I somewhat annoyed that you bothered to ask it here. Do you not know how to use google or yahoo or altavista? These two postulated but undiscovered particles are completely different and have completely different properties. For example: The postulated Higgs boson produces mass. The postulated graviton transmits gravitational force between things with mass. The Higgs boson has spin 0. The graviton has spin 2. The Higgs boson has a nonzero rest mass. The graviton has a rest mass of zero. And so on.

Will your life be forever changed should the scientists in Switzerland discover the Higgs/Boson particle?

This would be proof that God isnt the creator of the Universe, but some how i have a feeling you will say God created the Higgs/Boson particle, thus slipping back into the old ways of using your religious beliefs as an excuse for everything.
Answer: It wouldn't be proof at all, but there's another issue which is relevant here: Hawking radiation. Assuming God is all-knowing, quantum mechanics can't be true if God exists. Quantum mechanics claims there are undecided phenomena which become facts by being observed. If God exists and is all-knowing, all phenomena are observed. Hawking radiation is the process whereby micro black holes would disappear. The theory is that black holes lose mass because a particle-antiparticle pair, which is virtual rather than real because it's unobserved, on the event horizon of a black hole would become real because one of the pairs would fall into the black hole and cease to interact with the rest of the Universe and the other would radiate out. Since mass has to be conserved, this means the black hole has to get smaller when this happens, and if the black hole is small enough, it would disappear very fast. However, if there is a God of the kind i've described, that God is all-knowing and virtual particles of that kind cannot exist. Therefore, if there is a God, micro black holes will not evaporate and would probably constitute evidence for God's existence or for quantum theory being wrong. If they do evaporate, either there is no God of that kind or God's perception of reality does not depend on bivalent logic.

Can you explain the importance of the HIGGS BOSON particle to the average person?

I realise that its very important, highly desirable and that governments will spend billions to find it. What I dont understand are the reasons why. If its discovered, will it have a practical use? Will it show us something amazing? As basic as possible please - if you found the Higgs boson particle, what would you do after that? Many thanks.
Answer: The Higgs boson is a subatomic particle proposed by Peter Higgs. The particle is of much interest because, as far as we've come in describing the laws that govern the universe, gravity leaves us perplexed. (Hence string theory and extradimensional theories alike.) Basically, gravity is the force of attraction between objects with mass. What gives an object mass? Surely most would say atoms, but what gives atoms mass? The Higgs boson is a proposed particle that exists within a field (much like an electromagnetic field) which gives matter mass. People are desperately trying to find it because it helps unify the forces of nature (which most physicists agree need to be unified if they all originated from the same place, ie the big bang). Finding a Higgs boson (in experiments in the Large Hadron Collider, for example) would lend immense insight into gravity, one of the least understood forces (at least on the subatomic level).

If the Large Hadron Collider fails to detect the HIGGS BOSON, What would it mean for science?

If we fail to detect a Higgs boson with the LHC, what would it mean for science? What theories would have to be reviewed? Also, why do we need to go about this experiment in order to find the Higgs boson? Where exactly are we expecting it to be? Is it hidden away in some atom, or is the idea of the experiment to create one in the collision?
Answer: physicists are hoping to find the Higgs boson, or at least the remains of one as it will only exist for a few microseconds before breaking down into other particles, because this is the only missing link in the general model of physics. the theory is that this is the particle that gives other particles their mass. the Higgs boson is basically dark matter it is a very heavy particle. the theory is that as particles pass through the higgs field they interact with it, gaining their mass. not finding the Higgs boson would be a huge blow to boson's theory and physics would still be stuck where it is at the mooment, trying to work out why this universe IS and why matter triumphed over anti-matter in the microseconds after the big bang. we would be back to square one and physicists would give up on the higgs theory and search for a new theory to base more research on.

How would the discovery of the HIGGS BOSON affect string theory?

Also, what evidence have we found to suggest the existence of the Higgs boson?
Answer: String theory seems to require our world to have a property called supersymmetry. Whereas the mass of the Higgs boson cannot be calculated in the old Standard Model without supersymmetry, a Supersymmetric Standard Model with string theory boundary conditions does contain Higgs bosons and can predict and explain their properties. Also, in the Supersymmetric Standard Model the mass can be calculated approximately to be 40-90 GeV. This value is right on the cusp of energies which the Tevatron can reach, and easily within energies that the LHC can already reach even at partial power.* Thus, a positive discovery of the Higgs boson would tend to support the case for the supersymmetric model and string theory as well. However, even if the LHC fails to find the Higgs particle (because it turns out not to exist), it's quite possible that it could still find evidence for the Higgs mechanism, and that would still be strong support for supersymmetry and string theory. The LHC would then most likely spend most of its time searching for evidence of the missing supersymmetric superpartners. At this point, any kind of support for string theory, even indirect, would be welcomed, because as you probably already know there is no experimental evidence for the theory at all. _______ *Despite a number of false alarms and rumors in recent years regarding the possible discovery of the Higgs boson, theoretical predictions for the mass of the Higgs particle seem to show that we probably should have seen it already. The predicted maximum possible mass for the Higgs is around 170-180GeV, but most expect it to be no more than 115GeV. If they don't find it in the next round of LHC runs at 2TeV, someone is going to have to go back to the drawing board on the Standard Model and try to figure out where they went wrong.

If it wasn't for space travel, there probably wouldn't be cell phones, satellite television, or computers in everyones home. Someday, someone will say, "if it wasn't for particle accelerators, we would never have..."

ESSAY; How Do Eminent Physicists Tackle HIGGS BOSON? With Chocolate

In 2005, at a festive midsummer nights banquet at Uppsala Castle in Sweden, I chose a seat across the table from two of the worlds leading experts on particle physics: the theorist Frank Wilczek, the previous years winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, and Janet Conrad, a leading experimentalist. As the northern sun lingered late into the - Essay by theoretical physicist Robert Garisto describes bet made by his colleagues Frank Wilczek and Janet Conrad on the mass of the theoretical particle known as the Higgs boson; particles mass is key to proving contentious theory of supersymmetry, which contradicts basic principles of the Standard Model of physics; winner of bet will receive trove of chocolate if, and when, particle is discovered at the Large Hadron Collider. A news analysis article on Tuesday about rumors and hints of potential discoveries at two competing particle accelerators misstated the surname of a researcher at the CERN laboratory outside Geneva who speculated that the labs Large Hadron Collider could detect the elusive Higgs boson soon. He is Gigi Rolandi, not Roland.
