Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. Answer: The 2012 hoax-off has many claims, even quite a few that are self contradicting, and many others that contradict other parts of it. It is difficult to calculate where it began. It seems several different armageddon's sort of (slowly at first, then faster and faster as of recent months) "merged" into one. First off, you have the Mayan Calender, (a cyclical calender) that turns over to a new Baktun on Dec. 21 (or 23 to some people's interpretations) 2012. It's the equivalent of a new year's day for them. The calender rolls over, like your car odometer would... and you car doesn't end when it ticks over to a new front digit, does it? The guy to blame for this nonsense is Jose Arguelles. Do a wiki search on him to determine if he has any understanding of archeaology or interpretation of Mayan artifacts, (credentials are lacking, imagination is not). Then decide if you wish to believe him or not. The Planet X nonsense is the concoction of Nancy Lieder. She tried to sell books to "survive the end of the world" when this planet was suppossed to crashinto earth, or cause a pole shift, or whatever... back in 2003. Since she didn't sell enough books, she republished it, changed the date to match with Jose Arguelles' end of the world, and, VOILA! A new money making machine with zero scientific evidence whatsoever!!! Hooray! A sucker is born every minute... And Ms. Leider wants that suckers wallet. Throw her lil sidekick Mark Hazelwood into the mix, and you have a recipe to confuse people into scaring them into emptying their wallets. It's a shame if you ask me. What else? Zechariah Sitchin's Niburu? Ooooh, don't get me started. First of all, he misinterpreted an ancient Sumerian artifact. Fudged some dates on some mass extinction periods on earth, and came up with some 2085 date for the Annunaki to come back and get the gold from earthlings that we've alledgedly suppossed to have been mining for them for a few millenia. Problem is, Sitchin's fake planet was not intended to come in 2012, he claims it will return in 2085 (equally impossible), either way he is upset the 2012ers had no problem hijacking his planet and throwing it into the mix, not that a fake planet will come by no matter what hypothetical year you attribute to it. The LHC collider was fired up on: 10 September 2008 and shut down: 19 September 2008 after a malfunction. Now I can't help but wonder why no one wants to talk about this 'prediction' anymore! Obviously nothing happened last year because we are all still here. Now consider that no Dooms Day Prediction has ever come true, ever. Also, the People who built the Meso-American Long Count Calendar (on which this so-called prediction is based) failed to predict their own end (through assimilation) way before 2012. This was an event far more important to them than anything which could happen in 2012. Why would anyone believe that they succeeded in predicting our end when they failed to predict their own end? I have been hearing alot about the world ending on December 21 2012, the reasons are that the mayan civiliazations calendar which has been running for 4000 years or something like that will end on this date, they also say all the planets will line up in the center of the milkyway, which happens very rarely...there was a whole history channel episode about it, there are also dozens of website counting down, some of them have survival packages and the like...Y2k anyone?
Answer: It is the perennial human concern to imagine the world is going to end during their life time. Yk2 was one great example but human history is littered with the remains of people worrying about the end of the world. The religious see the world ending in the rapture while the non-religious imagine the world ending in some type of climate change. The whole 2012 thing is just the latest in a long line of stupid worries that the human race has had about the world ending.

Everybody talks about December 21 2012 being the end of the world. There were other predictions, werent there? So what makes Dec 21 get all this hype?
Answer: The big difference between 2012 and all the previous doomsday predictions is that so many children and teenagers now have access to the internet. There is a glut of doomsday sites (all selling something) and so much garbage on YouTube that the kids are seeing this BS everywhere. They haven't yet learned to differentiate between a trash website and a credible one. The History Channel also has been a major contributor to the 2012 hysteria. They have given up their credibility in favor of ratings and have been bombarding us with doomsday programs using fake "experts" and pseudoscience.

Answer: The original prophet studied Arts in Chicago in the 1960s. He called himself Jose Arguelles then. He now says time is faster than light (whatever that means) and that the way we measure time is harmful to all life on Earth (how does that work?). He now calls himself Valum Voltan and says he is the re-incarnation of a Mayan priest, last I heard. All this stuff was based on the fact that a Mayan count of days runs out of numbers on 21 or 23 December by our calendar. That has as much to do with the Mayan counting system as anything else. The Mayans counted by 20, then by 18s then by 20 again and so on. The Mayans were pretty fair naked eye astronomers for a stone age people and had enough sense not to predict anything at all, except maybe party time. I reckon they were smarter than Arguelles. He might be nuts but he did not say the world would end on 21 December 2012. All he said was that this would be the beginning of a new era. That was about 20 years ago. Since then, people who are just as batty, but in a different way have grabbed his ideas and run away with them. Terence McKenna was an habitual user of psychedelic drugs and wrote down visions. He also produced a special (mis)interpretation of the I Ching, and when it didn’t quite fit 2012 he fudged it. Another called Nancy Lieder claimed that aliens had abducted her about 1993 and told her that a planet called X would pass close to the Earth and cause a magnetic pole shift and other damage. That would be in 2003. Since it didn't come, she started making up stories of how it was a trial to test the governments of the world and that the planet would appear later. She usually says 2012 as far as I know. Apart from Voltan, Mc Kenna and Lieder, others have jumped on the bandwagon and have predicted everything from bees dying to collisions with stray planets. There are supposed to be alignments with the other planets or the centre of the galaxy, a photon belt, crossings of the galactic central plane and on and on, none of which will happen. And dear old Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce get quoted too, as if anyone believes that stuff. So, one thing that will happen at the end of December 2012 is that some people will realise that scientists and people of commonsense were right all along, and that the pseudo-historians, fake scientists, astrologers, drug users like Terrence McKenna, new-age gurus, lunatic fringe end-times “Christian” preachers, paranoiacs and other ratbags were wrong or lying. The promoters of this, including the History Channel are vicious liars or wrong and only in it for the money. Why do people predict that the end of the world will be on DECEMBER 21 2012?

I just do not get how people make these predictions. From what I have heard this has happened before a couple of years ago and the prediction did not come true. Where do people get this stuff? Is it true that the world will end on December 21 2012? Or is it just a lie to get every one frightened?
Answer: First of all, the actual date that the Mayan Calendar starts and finishes is disputed and refuted, But let's assume that 12-12-2012 is generally the accurate date the 13th b'ak'tun will end. "But the Mayans said nothing about anything beyond that date!!!" No, they were aware of the 14th b'ak'tun. In fact, the Mayans knew of previous cycles, (and ones to come) as the Long Count calendar was actually sort of short for them, calendar wise. They had different calendars to make up for this. Now, assuming December 2012 is the end of anything even though it's unlikely, the Mayans speak of 2012 as the beginning of a new golden age. That doesn't sound so bad, does it? The Mayans we're an amazing people, they made an amazing calendar, and their stargazing and solar mapping is awe inspiring. But they never talk about "cataclysms" or "end times", it's all about rebirth baby, yeah baby yeah. The guy behind the doomsday nonsense is José Argülles, he started this end of the world rubbish. The Mayans did not predict the end of the world, José Argülles did! So before you build a bomb shelter and buy a bunch of assault rifles, remember: 4772 October 12 AD (the non translated Mayan date that might be December 2012) is not the end of anything friends, but maybe the beginning of something better, if you choose to believe in any of this silliness. So it's win/win!
