How do you feel about the banning of pit BULLS forever?

Two years ago, I heard people were no longer allowed to have any pit Bulls, not allowed to have their pit Bulls have any puppies. I heard everyone who owned any pit Bulls had to get their teeth trimmed, and spayed and neutered. How do all you dog lovers, and animal lovers feel about that?
Answer: I think it is horrible. Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs in the right hands. I think they are used as a status symbol by some, and not properly treated by a lot of owners. I have met some amazing pit Bulls who were the greatest family dogs anyone could ask for, who got along with everyone and everything. I don't believe every pit owner should be punished for the mistakes of a few owners. What about the pit Bulls who are family pets, who cuddle with the cat and sleep by their owner's feet at night, and play with the children in the back yard? Or the pits who are therapy dogs or police dogs? and yes, there are those guys out there. In my opinion, pit bull sales should be regulated but not banned. I would want it to be illegal for anyone under the ages of 18 or 21 to own one, for spay/neuter to be required for anyone but licensed, certified pit bull breeders, and for shelters to only adopt them out to responsible people with background checks. Also harsher punishments for animal cruelty violations, including but not limited to dog fighting, which I am sure you are aware that pit Bulls play a major part. Anyway, that is my two cents.

Answer: Humans made this dog "vicious". Pits do have some aggresion issues, but with proper training and a responsible owner, no dog is vicious. Pits are very good, loyal dogs they have a bad rep due to irresponsible owners.

Theyre loving and sensitive and great with kids. How come people wont adopt them from the Humane Society? I have a couple big terriers myself (they arent pit Bulls though). I just heard that there are 30,000 Bulls killed each year in Spanish bull fights. I dont know if this is true or not, but Im sure its a big number. I dont think you normally eat Bulls. Is anything productive done with them?
Answer: As Jane said, the meat is sometimes given to the poor and you can eat it in many restaurants and buy it in specialist butchers. It does have a much stronger flavour than normal beef - more like ox. In fact, they do have a dish which is "oxtail", as in "oxtail soup". Depending on the bull "family" and fight conditions the meat costs more or less. The animals are bred just for bullfighting. Without the bullfight, they would probably be extinct, and many are left to graze on the best pastures until they die (unlike the majority of veal we see packed into the lorries along the motorways). They are definitely not given drugs of any kind. There are particularly rigorous medical checks and controls on all the animals (unlike all the poultry, pork and beef we so happily eat). The brave bull is a glorified animal - not just there in the ring because they need to kill something. Each "family" has its special traits which need to be taken into account when it's in the ring. They are particularly prized, worth a fortune, and are beautiful, powerful creatures. You need to experience Spain, understand their view on the world, beauty and art to appreciate the real passion behind the bullfight. There's no way you can be convinced that it's normal, or condem them if you haven't been immersed in Spanish culture for a long time.

Why a disproportionate number of pit BULLS at shelters?

If you look at the breeds that are available in shelters, there seems to be an awful lot of pit Bulls, definatly more than any other breed. Why? Not to generalize BUT, do the types of people that get pit Bulls have a disregard for animals? Of course I am not talking about the ignorant that use them for fighting, they obviously are devoid of normal feelings and have gutter ethics. I am talking about those that get a pit bull to be a pet.
Answer: They are called Pitt Bulls for a reason. They were specifically bred for bull fighting. They have strong jaws that latch onto their enemy and lock once attached. I have heard you can pound on their heads and not have them release you once they have a hold. Based upon their breeding and history, most Pitts are bred for illegal dogs fighting. Even a mixed Pitt stands a better chance in the ring then say, a Laborador. That aside, they truly are good dogs when in the hands of a good and decent person. My friend had one and he used to ride in the car with us all day as we made our rounds after Katrina. He kept people away from us because they saw a Pitt and pretty much ran, but he was really a big ole lovey. My partner took him because the former owners kept him in a cage and maybe gave him food and water if they remembered. For my partner, and for Riddick the Pitt, it was a rescue.

There was also the fact that I won a nice size bet with a Bulls-fan friend of mine by betting him that the Bulls would win the title after they got Rodman. He tought that Rodman would blow the team up, I told him Jordan and Pippen would never allow that to happen. But I digress. Had Jordan not retired, they would not have won the title in '95, due to the lack of an inside presence. However, with Jordan, it's very possible they could have won the title in '94, with Horace Grant still around to provide interior defense and rebounding. Houston would have been tough in '94, that would have been a fun final to watch. But there's no way they could have won it in '95, besides, Jordan was back for those playoffs. There's no reason why the supposed GOAT would need a full season to refresh his memory as to how to play the game of basketball. Seven titles in eight years, a very real possibility. Eight in a row, no way.

I just want to know what people hosestly think of pits and rotts here. I love them. Personaly I have a rottie pit mix and he is asome! My grandpa and uncle have pit Bulls and they are asome too. My moms freind has a dobbie that hated water and then she asked me to come over to help her! After about a week or 2 he swam in the water by himself. I just want to know what you think of them.
Answer: I love 'em all BUT I would never own a pit. They can be sweet for years and then turn on you. There are too many other breeds to take a chance like that.

How can I help pit BULLS not get euthanized by my humane society?

The Michigan Humane Society has a kill policy on all pit Bulls and pit bull mixes. It kills me to think of how many pits are being destroyed because of human beings not wanting to go after those at fault and instead just destroying the dogs. I want to know how i can help get them out of the humane society before they are killed so i can get them to a pit bull rescue. Answer: Once its passed, its a whole new fight....to work at preventing any additional ordinances or state legislation in favor or BSL...you can follow the information below from one of my favorite web sites: One of the most difficult things for those new to fighting BSL is expressing your feelings to the legislators and/or other officials who have proposed it. There are some very important things to remember when communicating with officials: First and foremost, ALWAYS BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL in all your communications with officials. Don't be combative or argumentative regardless of the difference between your point of view and theirs. Our dogs are worth putting your personal feelings of anger aside in order to communicate effectively. Stick to the facts. Try to avoid being emotional. It is a given that you love your dogs or you wouldn't be fighting for them. The simple truth is, the officials do not care how much we love our dogs -- they care about the safety of their constituents and their community. To that end, the facts related to the inefficiency of breed specific legislation and the integral part that irresponsible owners play in dog attacks are important facts to get across to them. Money talks. One thing that always catches the ear of officials is cost. Reinforce the fact that breed specific laws cost a lot of money - additional animal control, shelters fees, vetting, litigation, etc. The bottom line is simple... BSL costs tax payers A LOT of money! Breed identification. Another important flaw with breed specific laws is breed identification. There are a minimum of twenty-five (25) breeds that possess the physical traits of 'pit Bulls.' Breed identification by animal control officers is subjective and, therefore, opens the city up to a liability issues in the event of mistaken identification. The "Find the Pit Bull" game is an excellent tool to demonstrate the difficulty of identifying 'pit Bulls." General letter writing tips: It is not necessary to type your letter. In fact, a handwritten letter has a tremendous impact. (As long as its legible!) Even a postcard is fine, as long as it's nott the pre-printed "form" card. Be brief and to the point. Try to limit your letter to one or two subjects. Include all bill titles and numbers whenever possible. Send your letter as soon as you hear about an issue or bill. If it comes up again later in the session, you can always write again or make a phone call. During the legislative session, send letters to the State Capitol building. During the interim, send letters to the legislators' home addresses. They will play in Chicago and will win that game there and they now have a lot of confidence to play in Detroit. The Bulls are hot right now and playing at their pace. Detroit seems to be tired and beat up. Detroit has a tendency to play lazy, but the Bulls have figured them out.
