Answer: None of the current motherboards use RDRAM. Intel phased out their RDRAM motherboard offerings a long time ago. The last RDRAM motherboard Intel offered were for Socket-478 Pentium-4's (D850 chipset).

What do you think of RAMBUS (RMBS) losing lawsuit to Micron?

Today their stock plunged 60% from around $18 to $4 at the lowest and closed at $7.19. In August the stock was at around $10 and until earlier today the stock was at $18 so it kept rising the last few months but their fundamentals werent good. Can I replace RAMBUS memory with another type?

This is for hardware geeks: My 8-year-old Dell has 256MB total Rambus memory in 4 184-pin RIMMs. Id like to add memory to keep it running (as a backup) but Rambus modules are rare, expensive, and appear to be all second-hand. Can I install any other type of memory in these slots? If so, please be very specific so Ill know what to search for. Thanks!

Why is DDR and DDR2 ram being used over RAMBUS?

Rambus is stronger technology with much better architecture. It comes with a 1033Mhz bus speed (one way) and can take heat better. Why is DDR being used instead!?
Answer: Yes as good as Rambus is it will never gain a significant market share. The lisencing scheme makes it more expensive to produce and sell RD-RAM. The other factor is limited production. RD-RAM doesn't sell as many units as DDR sells so less of it is produced. There are also less companies who make Rambus due to the royalties(less competition). Also the problem might lie with distributors being negatively biased. I bought a PC in 2001 with 256 MB Rambus ram within two years the price almost doubled, and then no one in RSA even bothered to put it on their pricelist becuase nobody was buying. Still now none of my suppliers here in RSA sell Rambus, because there is only a small portion of people who can afford computers, and an even smaller portion who can afford such the luxury of Rd-Ram. Sony had the forsight to put Rambus in PS2 and PS3 will use Rambus as well, which once again means it will be more expensive than consoles running on DDR/2.

Answer: There is no CPU that would be compatible with all those different types of RAM modules, my friend. The different types of RAM modules would need to fit on different motherboards/mainboards, thereby limiting which CPUs would fit the different types of sockets that each motherboard would have.

Answer: Some motherboards let you replace RD with SD but to make sure check the motherboard maker website. If you replace it though you are going to lose the benefits of Rambus.

Can RDRAM ram chips be used in place of RAMBUS?

I have an older motherboard, and it uses Rambus ram chips. I was told by some that I could use RDRAM with it, and some say that I must use the older Rambus chips. Rambus chips are hard to find and expensive when I do. Can anyone say with certainty whether RDRAM can in fact be used inplace of Rambus?
Answer: RDRAM is the hardware, Rambus is simply the name of the company that "invented" the specs (depending on who you believe in the lawsuits). When talking about the hardware though, RDRAM and Rambus are the same thing.
