How do I protect myself from phony criminal charges for accessing a friends email account and website?

I had a professional relationship with someone and it went sour. For months we accessed each others email accounts and websites. We gave each other our passwords and full permission to access these accounts as our relationship was in good standing and we trusted each other. Now he is acting so crazy that he is threatening to tell the police that I had no authorization to access his email and website. Im really afraid because I cant prove he gave me verbal permission. I did a little digging on the internet and I think he has to have my mac address to prove I accessed his account. Im thinking of just selling my laptop since the mac address is part of the computer. So, if I get rid of my computer will I get this psycho off of my back? Also, can just the IP address give my exact location away? What is the difference between MAC address and IP address? Note: I use an unsecured wireless network for free that apparently a neighbor nearby has so I dont have any internet service or router and such. Thanks.
Answer: Not totally sure, but I don't think the police are going to have anything to do with these matters, anyway, so your former partner's threats of calling them are sort of lame. It's not like you're accessing his/her bank account and stealing money. Internet "law" is still in relative infancy compared to many other types of law. There are still many gray areas and not a big history of case law to go by. Most cops, if they received a complaint about the issues you mention, would probably tell the person making the complaint that it's a civil matter and therefore not under their jurisdiction, I would think. My ex-wife once read my e-mails and also opened up a real letter addressed to me and read it. I think she knew that even if I notified some "authority" it wasn't likely they were going to do much. Yeah, opening somebody's mail is a felony and all that, but perjury is illegal also and, in civil court especially, it's rare for anybody to do jail time for such offenses. As far as "stealing" your neighbor's Internet, it seems to me that if they were so concerned about other people sharing their bandwidth, they'd probably secure it in the first place. I once got caught by some dingbat cop while I was sitting in my car outside a Holiday Inn with my laptop. I was living in my car at the time and had no money, so it was either that or no way to send e-mails, use VoIP and all that stuff. I didn't even have a cellphone. This cop who caught me gave me some sermon about 'stealing the Holiday Inn's" internet service because I wasn't a registered guest and how they wouldn't appreciate it if they found out, but after his officious lecture, he said I wasn't in trouble or anything. Yeah, like he really wanted to be the laughing stock of the entire police department for busting me for something like that. . I believe I read recently that serious Internet fraud (involving large sums of money, etc.) is under the purview of the US Postal Service, oddly enough, but not the local constabulary.

Answer: http://www.infowars.com/draconian-anti-piracy-censorship-bill-passes-senate-committee/ This act is a cover for NSA and DHS to spy on dissenting websites that support libertarianism, constitutionalism, and anti-government sentiment. Using no formal definitions or examples, some court can say that a website has infringed upon copyrighted material without any actual evidence supporting this claim. Then said website gets taken down. It's like China had babies with Nazi Germany. Welcome to the New World Order.

Answer: The key parts of the headers here are X-Originating-IP and the Received From details. As Hotmail now uses SPF, and the reverse DNS (which IP address the blahblah.hotmail.com stuff points to) all checks out (which is spoofable, but obvious) that discounts that. The X-Originating-IP tells the story for me: it's 202.124.72.171, which according to DomainTools (http://whois.sc/202.124.72.171) is an IP address which belongs to Three Australia. Looks like whoever sent it used their Three dongle (or tethered their Three smartphone to their machine) in order to actually send the email. There's not really much more I can gather from those headers, detailed though they are - much of it is just your employer's internal mail infrastructure accepting the message from outside and passing it internally through the various mailservers until it reaches yours. All the best with your sleuthing, hope you find the culprit! (let me know if you do :)

Worse Than China? U.S. Government Wants To Censor Search Engines And Browsers?

Is USA Ready for this Invasion of Privacy? We knew that members of Congress and their business allies were gearing up to pass a revised Internet Blacklist Bill -- which more than 325,000 Demand Progress members helped block last winter -- but we never expected it to be this atrocious. Last years bill has been renamed the "PROTECT IP" Act and it is far worse than its predecessor. A summary of it is posted below. Senators Leahy and Hatch pretended to weigh free speech concerns as they revised the bill. Instead, the new legislation would institute a China-like censorship regime in the United States, whereby the Department of Justice could force search engines, browsers, and service providers to block users access to websites, and scrub the American Internet clean of any trace of their existence. BIG BROTHER GONE MAD!
Answer: People are waking up and the internet is the 'train'. (fountain of knowledge) The tyrants know this and they are trying to destroy the 'vehicle' and blame it on Al Qaeda.

Help with TCP/IP study guide?

I am taking a class over TCP/IP and for the final instead of giving us a study guide he gave us a list of questions to study the answers to. Unfortunately, I spent the weekend studying for the final I had yesterday, then I had to go to work and after work I studied for the final I had today, and once I get off work all I have is the hours from 5pm until I go to bed to study for my final exam for my TCP/IP class that is tomorrow morning. Like I said, its not for a grade, it is just to help us study for the final. Any help anyone can give on answering these questions will be greatly appreciated. Here are the questions: 1. What does DHCP deliver? 2. What can DHCP exclude? 3. Does Internet Security IP implementations make it possible to encrypt and protect segments at the Transport layer? 4. What do exterior gateway protocols (EGP) do? 5. In SNMP, an object is identified by what? 6. What does the SNMP community acts as an interface between? 7. What does the Class A network address 127.x.x.x do? 8. Is the IPv6 header variable length? 9. If no DHCP server is present in some broadcast domain, what happens? 10. How does an administrator explicitly assigns an IP address manually by associating a client’s hardware address with a specific IP address to be leased to that client? 11. What does a DHCP client do when it boots up? 12. What packet is sent from the server to the client to indicate the completion of the four-packet DHCP Discovery process? 13. How can you troubleshoot DHCP? 14. What is packet sniffing? 15. What is session hijacking? 16. What is a DOS attack? 17. What are the challenges in automating the routing process? 18. How do Link-state routers meet their neighbors? 19. What does Mobil IP do? 20. Which version of SNMP does not encrypt passwords? 21. What creates and maintains a reliable connection more consistent with NetBIOS session needs? 22. What is a command-line program that returns statistics on NetBIOS?
Answer: DHCP delivers IP address assignments DHCP can exclude computers (or any network device) not recognized by failing to return an IP.. or by returning an invalid IP ... based on MAC address. depends on what OSI stack you are using - if 7 layer stack, then sure.. you can encrypt at Transport layer.I don't know on the 3 layer stack.. I'd guess yes. I dunno. dunno dunno 127 addresses are loopbacks or bogons. dunno With no DHCP server, IP addresses need to be assigned manually, or network devices don't connect. Pretty much defines what a DHCP server does. Adminstrator adds client to DHCP client list. DHCP client boots up a lot like other machines. Along the way, it broadcasts a packet to request an address lease. not sure - Ack I think too many to list "listening" to packets on a network without changing .. a passive act. an aggressive act - sometimes using MITM attack, where a session cookie is copied for someone else's use. DOS- denial of service. Create so much traffic.. requests without acknowledge.. ping flood, syn floods, or zombie army... overwhelming the target so they cannot do anything except answer the attacker. To the outside, it looks like the victim/target is down, not answering, or ridiculously slow. efficiency, security, accuracy.. pretty much the same as any business challenge. dunno donno donno donno nbtstat.. and others
