Happy Outsourced Holiday; O Perfect Tree, O $3,500

CHRISTMAS trees, it can be agreed, are dangerous objects. They are annually the source of freakish but tragic house fires, pet mishaps and emotional conflagrations involving the deployment of tiny colored bulbs. Yet we love Christmas trees, or anyway I do. What are the PYSICAL properties of OOBLECK?

Homework help again...
Answer: An Oobleck is what is known as a shear-thickening fluid. Shear-thickening fluids are a type of non-Newtonian fluid. What defines the shear-thickening (or dilatant) is that as a shear force is applied to the fluid the viscosity (a measure of how difficult it is for the fluid to flow in a way) increases.

Can a paintball be made with OOBLECK?

Would it hurt to be hit by one?
Answer: I have no idea if a paintball could be made with Oobleck, but assuming some moderate velocity, it seems reasonable that it would hurt to be hit with Oobleck. You'll notice that if you hit a piece of Oobleck at high velocity it feels very solid. It's only if you let it sit that it relaxes and flows like a liquid. It seems to me that this would imply that if you got smacked with a bit of Oobleck it would be quite solid, and thus would probably hurt when it hit you.

What is the science of OOBLECK on a subwoofer?

Answer: A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid whose flow properties cannot be described by a single constant viscosity. An inexpensive, non-toxic example of a non-Newtonian fluid is a solution of corn starch (corn flour) and water, sometimes called Oobleck. The application of force - for example by stabbing the surface with a finger, or rapidly inverting the container holding it - leads to the fluid behaving like a solid rather than a liquid. This is the "shear thickening" property of this non-Newtonian fluid. More gentle treatment, such as slowly inserting a spoon, will leave it in its liquid state. Trying to jerk the spoon back out again, however, will trigger the return of the temporary solid state. A person moving quickly and applying sufficient force with their feet can literally walk across such a liquid. Cornstarch fluid is placed on a metal sheet on a subwoofer. The cornstarch/water slurry is rheopectic, which means that as pressure is applied its viscosity increases. The subwoofer applies a little bit of pressure all over the place, and when pressure is applied faster than the slurry can return to standard viscosity you start to get the "buildup" effects. Tons of little variants in the system (such as differences in thickness of the slurry at any given point) cause the little writhing towers to rise from the muck. Why does OOBLECK do what it does?

Why is Oobleck runny when you let it go and a solid when you hold it tight or scoop it fast? I need this for the science fair and no search engine will give me any answers. This is my only hope. PLEASE help me!
Answer: You're talking about the fictional green substance in the children's book? Anyway... It has to do with the molecules. If they are allowed to "be free," they do so and contribute to a runny substance. When you scoop it, the molecules compress (and likely link into some sort of structure) creating something more of a solid. You can see this with real substances.

Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid, which means it hardens when something smacks into it. If you soaked foam in a non-newtonian fluid, would that harden on impact as well?
Answer: yes, it would. but i'm not sure you could soak it into foam. the pores would probably be too small and filter out the corn starch. this would leave you with a damp sponge and some crumbly cornstarch
