Can someone explain how BCS STANDINGS work?

Im confused why teams that are undefeated like Utah and Boise State are ranked 9 and 6 in the Bcs standings. Why are they not in the top 5 under or tied with Alabama? Can you explain to me how they rank in the Bcs standings?
Answer: BCS rankings... Good Question... As nobody really understands it fully, and it is still a surprise every week as to who will be ranked where.... There are three main components to each team's overall ranking: 1. Harris Interactive Poll, taken among many members of the media and prominent sports writers, gives each team a ranking based on votes. Each team's score among these voters is divided by the total possible, giving you a Harris Poll Average. (For example, Alabama currently has 2839 out of 2850 points, giving them a score of 99.6) 2. Coaches' Poll, taken among 61 league coaches, is given a score in the same fashion that the Harris Poll would be. (Currently Alabama has 1518 out of 1575, giving them an average of 96.4) 3. Computer Rankings Average: Is tallied by taking the average of 4 out of the 6 computer rankings relevant to the BCS. Each team's highest and lowest scores are eliminated as outliers. Each ranking has a different formula for deciding a team's strength, some focusing on strength of schedule, others on solely winning and losing, some on margin of wins, etc. Each of these 3 scores is then averaged again, and divided by 100 to give each team a final BCS Ranking Value between 0 and 1, and each team is then ranked accordingly. (Closest to 1 being the highest ranked.) As you can see, there are many ways in which a team can be helped or hurt in the rankings. The human polls (parts 1 & 2) are prone to bias among media members and coaches that perceive the 6 BCS conferences (SEC, Big XII, Big 10, Big East, PAC-10, and ACC) to be harder to play in than other conferences. Strength of Schedule has become a huge deal in the BCS, as teams like those of the SEC and Big XII are having to beat 3-4 ranked teams each season just to get to their conference championship, much less a BCS title game. Meanwhile teams like Utah and Boise State are going undefeated having played 1 or 2 at most. The assumption then is that these teams would not be as good if they played a harder schedule. So, while they may go undefeated, these teams are in all actuality never going to get to the BCS National Championship game, which is rough on these programs, but also probably a more accurate reflection of the talent of all of the teams in the country. (Although, I won't say MOST accurate, as I am still a proponent of a small bracket playoff at the end of the season to really know who the best teams are...)

This is a question concerning BCS STANDINGS in NCAA Football?

Of the top three teams in the BCS poll, as of today, Florida and Alabama are #1 and #2, both with a record of 11-0. Texas is ranked # 3, with a record of 12-0. Shouldnt Texas be ranked #1? It seems to me, if you have a number of undefeated teams, the one who has played the most games and remains undefeated should be #1. So, why is Texas not #1?

How is Oklahoma number 1 in the BCS STANDINGS?

Oregon is ranked number one in all the other polls, I thought that the computers were just one third of the Bcs standings.
Answer: Yeah.. the BCS calculation is 1/3 each of the Harris Poll, USA Today Coaches Poll, and the average of the 6 computer ranking systems. But the math is much more complicated than that. All three of those rank teams 1 thru 25 based on point totals. The two human polls use 25 points for a 1st place vote, 24 for a 2nd place vote, etc. The computer calculations are totals of all the points from the various factors in the programs they use to do the rankings 1 to 25. The final step is to convert all the points totals to percentages.. then average the three percentages to come up with a BCS ranking. ESPN's BCS ranking is much more useful than Yahoo's. I couldn't make any sense out of Yahoos page. For this week the numbers were: Oklahoma - Harris .8800 Coaches .9044 Computer .9800 ..average .9215 Oregon ----- Harris .9819 Coaches .9844 Computer .7100 ..average .8921 Boise St. -- Harris .9504 Coaches .9390 Computer .7800 ..average .8898 So Oklahoma was ranked #1. The much higher computer percentage is no doubt mostly because of the strength of schedule in the calculations.

Answer: I don't think that LSU should be ranked number 1, I watched them play Auburn, and I watched them play Alabama, there's no reason for dirty play. I bet I watched at least 15 facemask's that weren't called in the Alabama game, not to mention the intentional clothesline that was called. And Maze was down when LSU stripped the ball from him on the pass. I think Alabama held in there and played damn good football. LSU had their hands full in that game, I also think that Alabama played a better and cleaner game. Bama just didn't have it when it came to field goal kicks. The number 1 defense in the country was definitely there and playing strong.

Answer: Stupid conferences always have this problem. If conferences were limited to 10 teams every team would play each team in the conference. There would never be the problem of Mighty Missouri not playing Oklahoma. Twelve team conferences are set up to add cupcakes (THE CITADEL!!!) to the schedules and to not have head to head competition. That way their artificial high rankings are maintained by playing over ranked teams in conference. Actually Missouri should bow out and let Texas and Oklahoma have a rematch to settle the conference championship.

If youre number 2, and you BEAT the number 3 team in the BCS, how is it fair that they could jump you, even when you won your most recent game?
Answer: It's not fair. If both teams play head-to-head, there's no way that the loser of that game should be ranked higher than the winner if they both have identical records. It may not matter -- Baylor is giving TTU all they can handle and Crabtree may be doubtful for the rest of the game.
